⛷️Trailer drop: “THE 7 STAGES OF BLANK”

9/10/2019

Last season we were honoured to host a crew of award-winning producers and athletes up at Journeyman Lodge.  They experienced Callaghan Country's legendary pillows and pow along with that not-so-mythic early season neck deep skiing our guests are familiar with.  This season we're celebrating in the pre-season stoke.  Check out the OFFICIAL TRAILER FOR BLANK COLLECTIVE FILMS' LATEST FILM, “THE 7 STAGES OF BLANK”...
Anticipation. Inspiration. Creativity. Perseverance. Experience. Exploration. Satisfaction. These 7 Stages are designed to postulate a progression of the emotional stages during a ski season.

Watch as Rey, Godbout, Josh Daiek, Mike Douglas, Sam Kuch, Tony Lamiche, Mark Abma, Vinnie Gagnier, Evan McEachran, Barclay Desjardins, Jordy Kidner, Nico Vugnier, Jules Mandin, Andrea Byrne, Phil Langevin and the Whistler Freeride Club bring you on a journey through the 7 Stages of Blank, while taking a lighthearted look into the bond that develops around the sport of skiing.

From neck-deep pow here at Journeyman Lodge in Callaghan Country outside of Whistler, B.C., Mount Baker Ski Area, Washington and Lake Tahoe, California, to spine-tingling ascents and descents in Chamonix, France and Valais, Switzerland, to creativity gone wild in the terrain parks of Whistler Blackcomb, and an all-out assault on the awe-inspiring peaks that surround Whistler, Pemberton and Bralorne, B.C., The 7 Stages of Blank, which will premiere in Whistler on Saturday, September 28th at the Maury Young Arts Centre and later be released online for free through Salomon TV, will serve as one of the must-see ski movie events of the year.

It's the most delicious time of year!

Picture
Picture
SCHEDULE...
  • 8:00am suggested arrival at the Callaghan Lake parking area and trailhead
  • Please allow for a minimum 2 hr hike into Journeyman Lodge.  Be sure to pick a cup of berries along the way so you can deliver them to our Lodge Chef for the huckleberry pancakes
  • 9:00am-Noon Pancake Brunch and social in the lodge dining room
Don't forget it's a wee bit different getting to Journeyman Lodge in the summer…
Self-Drive and Hike:
Follow the Callaghan Lake Forest Service Road to Callaghan Lake. It is about 8.5km from the Alexander Falls base to Callaghan Lake on a rough road and it takes about 20 – 35 minutes. We recommend using a vehicle with good clearance (4WD preferred). The trail to the lodge begins about 250m before you reach the lake – look for the sign on your left. There is a small clearing just off the road – park here. From here, the hike is 4.5 km and will take between 1.5 – 2 hours depending on your ability and fitness level.

As a series, the events provide Nordic skiers 3 opportunities over the course of the winter season to benchmark their own personal time to ski the 13.5km groomed nordic trails up to Callaghan's high elevation network and Journeyman Lodge.  It's a non-competitive atmosphere and there's no need to be a pro but, proper preparations will ensure you feel like one.  Here's our top tips and insights to maximize the experience...
Picture
Picture
  • Commit yourself and thoughtfully consider your personal goals.  For beginners, we recommend your first goal is as simple as making it.  No need to rush because you've got to get yourself back down the same trail, and spaghetti-legs certainly don't help!  See how long the first trip takes, then set a time target just slightly shorter for the next event.  Beyond time targets, it's also helpful to benchmark your physical response to each challenge.
  • Start it right!  Hydrate as soon as you wake-up and make sure you've eaten a full breakfast.  Check our current conditions page so you know what you're getting into for the day.  If you have a morning stretch or yoga routine, all the better...plan to arrive limbered up.  Arrive early (gate opens at 8:30am).
  • Team up.  We recommend skiing with a buddy to ensure you're not alone on the trail and it is just more fun with a friend!
  • Bring snacks to make sure you have enough fuel to get to your destination and plenty of water to keep you hydrated *Please note, there is no running water at our base facilities but we do have drinks available for purchase at the Alexander Falls Touring Centre.
  • Review your tools.  Consider Climbing/'Kicker' skins for your XC Skis.  They are an excellent tool to help save energy during the long climbs into the lodge – these are available for rent at the Alexander Falls Touring Centre.  If you have limited experience, we recommend using classic skis as they are better suited for long distance. If possible, use gear that you're familiar with and has already been broken in.  Even if the gear is familiar, be sure to pack some extra bandaids and moleskin in the event of pesky blisters!
  • Bring extra clothing layers for the variety of conditions you may experience: start with thin layers (it's the first 3.5km that's a grunt), but pack some warmer layers as temperature will drop with the elevation gain.  The ski out can be quite chilly once you start going downhill on Mainline Trail; that's when you'll really be grateful for the added layer!
  • Take it all in.  On top of getting an amazing full body workout, you are in one of the most beautiful places on earth...big claim yes, but there's no hesitation making it.  Let the sights and sounds of the surrounding environment energize you along the way.
Go for it! The first event is this Sunday... Advanced registration is required; this allows us to place an appropriate food order before the event. Registration closes at 50 participants. The event cost is $10 per person for registered participants + Ski Callaghan Admissions (trail ticket fee or season pass)

Call us at 604.964.0058 or email us at info@callaghancountry.com to register.

A hot chili lunch (both meat and veggie) will be served up at Journeyman Lodge from 12pm – 2pm. Event Participants are welcome to use our traditional woodfired sauna, but will need to bring their own towels.

We're excited to announce the launch of  our new Fireside Speaker's Series: 'Tales from the Callaghan'.  Designed to promote a sense of place and connect our community of 'Callaghan Country fans', each month we will host a special guest speaker for a casual apres-ski chat at our trailside bonfire next to the Alexander Falls Touring Centre.

Another ski season is upon us!

12/19/2018

Here we go again... it's the beginning of another ski season!  Summer feels like went by in a blink but that’s okay because, here at Callaghan Country, we really love winter and all things that come this time of year!

After postponing our opening day due to lack of snow, we were hit with the perfect storm...and it just kept coming!  The Coast Mountains were slammed with over 200cm of snow in a week, which meant 300cm blanketed the upper Callaghan Valley.  This left us with the challenge of seemingly endless snow-shovelling, packing, grooming, and re-grooming our Nordic trails.  The challenge is all too familiar and we have grown to enjoy it over the years. In fact, we love the frenzy of gearing up for opening day.  As a small business, we work hard but it’s hardly work when you’re having so much fun and you're rewarded with the smiling faces of customers.  What a fortunate endeavour!
We hope you can join us for some winter fun during this Holiday season and appreciate that it’s a busy time of year.  The Callaghan Country team also knows the importance of staying active during the festive season.  We all experience it; work parties, family celebrations, likely more that a little too much to eat and drink...it can certainly leave you feeling groggy.

Rejoice! Callaghan has the solution for you - Join us for some outdoor winter activities with your loved ones.  We have a lot of snow...meaning our ski & snowshoe trails are in excellent condition and the backcountry terrain is literally neck-deep, we offer Nordic equipment rentals for the whole family (including a chariot for the little one), our Callaghan Lake Snowshuttle will be running daily through the Holidays, there's still space in our 'Designed for Freedom' Skate Skiing Skills Clinic on December 26th, and our Navigations Skills for Backcountry Touring Clinics.  We also still have availability and special promotions over the Holidays for a stay at Journeyman Lodge.

If you are still looking for the perfect gift (yeah, we are running late too), you can purchase a Callaghan Country Gift Certificate.  This can go towards a stay at the Lodge, seats on our Callaghan Lake Snowshuttle, or one of our upcoming skills clinics.  The Alexander Falls Touring Centre Ski Shop also has a variety of gifts perfect for the outdoor enthusiasts in your family.  Pop in and say hello!

Whatever adventures you get up to during the Holidays, we hope Callaghan Country will be part of it and have the opportunity to share good times and memories with you and your family!

Praise Ullr is Back!

Join us Saturday, December 15th for our annual opening weekend party!

Our team has been working tirelessly to prepare our Nordic trail network for a pleasing opening to the 201819 winter season and it looks like Ullr is finally delivering some much needed snow over the next couple weeks.  We'll say it again, finally!!!!!  The wait has been S(no)w joke.
Family fun at Callaghan Country's Alexander Falls Touring Centre in Whistler BC
Join the Callaghan Country crew for our opening weekend as we kick-off the 2018/19 ski season with some goofy fun and special praise for Ullr!

FREE admission for those dressed in viking attire!

Ullr (pronounced Oool-er) stems from Norse mythology, where he was revered as the god of winter. Like us, Ullr loves the cold and especially travelling over Northern forest terrain on skis. This dude deserves our respect, so we’re going to spirit our winter patronage with some festive viking attire and an annual snow-dance around the Callaghan Country Bonfire Cauldron. This is located at the 1st entrance to Ski Callaghan (left over the bridge 8.5km up Callaghan Valley Rd).

Festivities begin at 2pm.  Please feel welcome to bring your hotdogs and or marshmallows for roasting.

Freedoms of the Callaghan...

11/8/2018

Picture
As a society, we have never been more time-starved and over-stimulated so the need to slow down, unplug and reconnect is more important than ever. Throw in an ever-looming threat of climate change and it only makes sense that more and more backcountry enthusiasts are opting to “Earn their turns” and overall self-propelled recreation is on the rise.  We ache for freedom, and the wilderness calls.

Callaghan Country's Journeyman Lodge was built on sweat equity and a belief in the inherent value of exploring the world beyond lift dependency. There are no free rides to the top and no one to hand-hold you through another cookie-cutter backcountry experience. In these mountains, you’re on your own, and you’re better off because of it.  An infamous Eleanor Roosevelt quote resonates..."With freedom comes responsibility."  Wilderness exploration does require certain capacities and skill sets. We're excited to announce that Callaghan Country has some early season Skills Clinics to build that toolkit!

Nordic Ski Clubs in BC's Lower Mainland

9/20/2018

Word's out...XC skiing is an excellent multi-generational sport, ideal for people of all ages and abilities. This outdoor winter sport is social and fun, a low impact yet full body workout supporting healthy cardiovascular functions. In BC, most children learn to cross-country ski through the their elementary school's participation in the Ski S'Kool Program, but there are also a variety of non-profit, community building, ski clubs committed to growing the sport for future generations.
Picture
From age 4 to adulthood, Nordic Ski Clubs offer programs that 'encourage all individuals to be involved in lifelong physical activity and articulates the need for children, particularly those who have an interest in competing in the sport, to be given a solid foundation in physical, technical, tactical and mental capacities upon which to build their performance abilities.'  The primary component of this is the Jackrabbit Programs, named after the legendary Hermann “Jackrabbit” Smith-Johannsen – a Norwegian immigrant that lived and skied to the impressive age of 112 (for real!).

There are a number of ways to engage the local Nordic community and pre-season is the best time of year to consider your options: volunteer positions, memberships, program enrolments, and special events...we've done our best to compile a comprehensive list to finding your Nordic Ski tribe this winter:

Snow has melted, bugs are beginning to fade, and nature's colour palette is emerging in full vibrancy.  It's finally here! The seasonal transformation of the Callaghan Valley is as dramatic as the landscape itself.  This season, we are keen to share this special place in its prime summer abundance by opening the doors of Journeyman Lodge to hikers from September 8th - 23rd.

Meet the 'Journeymen' of Journeyman Lodge

Our traditional Lodge Hosts are pursuing new adventures this time of year, so a few hardworking shareholders have stepped up to fill the gap:
  • Troy Bogan - Road Builder,
  • Bernd Carolsfeld - Master Carpenter,
  • Bernard Nowrath - Joiner, and
  • Rob Shortreed - Chef
The idea is to share the comforts of 'lodge life' with those wishing to explore Callaghan Country's hiking destinations from a cozy 'home base'.  We're going to be transparent...these guys are not trained hospitality professionals, but they are charming and knowledgeable locals, so you can count on that 'West Coast Hospitality' vibe.
Sept 8-10...Troy Bogan & Holly Shulte
Sept 14-16...Bernd Carolsfeld aka 'Van Dieselklaken'
Sept 21-23...Bernard Nowrath aka 'Boona' & Rob Shortreed
This will be a special time to meet some of the actual 'Journeymen' of 'Journeyman Lodge'...they carry the passion and the vision that has propelled Callaghan Country forward all these years, so go ahead and ask them for those stories!
The primary summer access route to Journeyman Lodge is a hike-in from Callaghan Lake Provincial Park.  During the late summer and early autumn months, Callaghan Lake is accessible by high clearance two wheel drive vehicle (driver's discretion advised). You can park your vehicle and follow a well defined hiking trail leading west from the BC Parks campsite for 4.5 kilometres. to the lodge. The trail is signed and climbs gently through a variety of West Coast forest types. The elevation gain is 150 metre elevation over 4.5 kilometres. Please allow about two hours (one way) from the trailhead to the lodge.   By day, trek and explore the spectacular surroundings of Callaghan Country.  By night, enjoy a family style meal, chatting with fellow guests, the warmth of a log-fire, and a good night’s sleep.
Our reservation calendar is already open for guests to book a stay!  Check availability & Book Online Now >>
The Wilderness Explorer's package is an independent hike-in / hike-out trip from Callaghan Lake.  Click here >> for a detailed Hiking map that includes a legend along with some helpful route/trail notes and tips.   A bit different than our winter packages, these hiking  packages INCLUDE accommodation & all meals (afternoon tea service & a Backcountry BBQ dinner, with a continental breakfast & bagged lunch + hot & cold non-alcoholic beverages) for each night booked; plus the use of our Traditional Scandinavian sauna!

"One Look is Worth A Thousand Words." ~ Fred R. Barnard

We're excited to announce a NEW immersive experience in the epic backcountry terrain of Callaghan Country.  Renowned adventure sports photographers, Ryan Kenny & Guy Fattal, have organized a unique opportunity to learn some specialized 'tricks of the trade' for budding outdoor photographers.  Move fast, spots are limited!
Picture
Ryan and Guy are keen to connect with interested participants to make sure this workshop would be the right fit for them.  In the meantime, we had a chance to ask a few questions about the upcoming clinic...
Q1.  Who is this workshop for?
A1.  The workshop is for any photographer that has always wanted to experience the backcountry and capture adventure like we do.

Q2.  How long have you and Guy been taking photos?
A2.  Guy and I (Ryan) have been taking photos for over 15 years.

Q3.  When did you realize you could make a career out of it?

A3.  I realized I could make a career out of it when my passion outweighed my doubts about going to a freelance lifestyle.

Q4.  What's the most common mistake you see among 'rookie' photographers?
A4.  The most common mistake among rookie photographers is not being present in the moment that you're trying to capture. sounds a bit cheezy but truth be told now in a digital age it seems a bit harder to take ones time.

Q5.  What's the foremost takeaway from this workshop that you would hope for participants?

A5.  We want people to take away an experience of a lifetime. We want to share techniques and information but also help them develop their own style. Through the art of storytelling and seeking adventure we hope to offer a workshop that leaves them as inspired as we are.

It's happening again!   Even though the weather patterns have been challenging this Summer, we are excited to open the doors of Journeyman Lodge to all and host this unique family friendly event.

Escape to a setting where food is found among the paths we walk, experience mountain camaraderie and explore nature at its best. The festival celebrates the history of the huckleberry and this year we will take a closer look at the roles that foods from the forest play in the cultivation of local cultural and natural heritage.

Yes we will be serving FREE pancakes and entertaining the ever popular Pie-Topper contest, but there is so much more to the Huckleberry Festival.  There will be nature talks, yoga, live music, children's nature art, interpretive hiking, tea tasting, and of course sauna-basking.

Itinerary Includes:
  • 8:00am suggested arrival at the Callaghan Lake parking area and trailhead
  • 8:30am join our special guest ethnobotanist, Bryce, from the Forager Foundation to learn about some of the edible and not so edible flora as we hike into Journeyman Lodge
  • 9:00am-Noon Pancake Brunch in the lodge dining room
  • Afternoon Tea Tasting in the lodge dining room
  • 1:00pm Yoga in the meadow with Josee (please bring your own yoga mats)
  • 1:30pm Pie-creations in the lodge dining room
  • 2:00pm Interpretive hike around Conflict Lake and back to parking area

It's all happening Sunday, September 13th!
