Freedoms of the Callaghan...

As a society, we have never been more time-starved and over-stimulated so the need to slow down, unplug and reconnect is more important than ever. Throw in an ever-looming threat of climate change and it only makes sense that more and more backcountry enthusiasts are opting to “Earn their turns” and overall self-propelled recreation is on the rise.  We ache for freedom, and the wilderness calls.

Callaghan Country's Journeyman Lodge was built on sweat equity and a belief in the inherent value of exploring the world beyond lift dependency. There are no free rides to the top and no one to hand-hold you through another cookie-cutter backcountry experience. In these mountains, you’re on your own, and you’re better off because of it.  An infamous Eleanor Roosevelt quote resonates..."With freedom comes responsibility."  Wilderness exploration does require certain capacities and skill sets. We're excited to announce that Callaghan Country has some early season Skills Clinics to build that toolkit!

Welcome aboard Guillaume!

With the 2018/2019 winter season almost upon us, we look forward to welcoming the latest addition to our Callaghan Country staff family— Introducing, Guillaume St-Louis!

Guillaume (‘Gui’ for the intimates) was born & raised in a small rural community of ‘La Belle Province’.   After being introduced to alpine skiing at a young age, he quickly developed a keen interest in winter recreation(despite the frigid winters!).  As a local Ski Club member, Gui remembers bussing to a tiny hill about an hour away where they would work on their pizza & fries skills. Just like many other ‘cool kids', Gui joined the snowboarding revolution.  For a period of time, he would despise skiing and could swear he would never ski again. Little did he know, his ambition to explore bigger mountains would bring him back to his roots.  After all, two planks are better than one for going uphill.

In his teenage years, Gui’s daydreams were fuelled by snowboarding videos of professional athletes riding the big mountains of Western Canada. After a rough 'teenage love' break-up, Gui and a close buddy crammed into a little Honda Civic hatchback loaded with snowboards & maple syrup for a trip out west. Playing hard & working his way up in the hospitality & tourism industry, Gui’s 'trip' never ended.  He has been calling the Sea to Sky Corridor home for almost 10 years now. Always active. you can find Gui on his skis (yes, skis!) exploring the backcountry or Callaghan Country’s Nordic trails during winter months.  When summer hits, he's exploring mountain trails by foot or mountain bike and the ocean by stand up paddle board.
Gui embodies an intrinsic sense of hospitality; he wants nothing more than to make sure you are having a good experience. He loves to share his knowledge & stories and enjoys a good conversation over a cup of coffee. He might not always understand the nuances of English humor due to his ‘Frenchness’ but he will gladly share his own humor which, in turn, you may not understand at times. Gui describes himself as a bit of a loner and he might seem shy at first contact but this won’t stop him from offering you a warm welcome accompanied by a friendly smile. Once the shell is broken, great relationships will unfold.
Over the past few years, Gui completed the Destination Resort Management Program at Capilano University which brought him to work with Deep Cove Canoe & Kayak as their Group Sales Coordinator, and then Sunwolf Resort & Rafting as their Operations Manager. He is now starting a new adventure with Callaghan Country and is excited to put his knowledge and passion at work to pursue the company’s vision 'to be known as a world-class mountain adventure wilderness destination for cross country skiing, backcountry skiing, telemark skiing, and self-propelled four season recreation of every kind.’  Needless to say, he fits right in and we're stoked to welcome him to our crew of mountain merry makers.

This winter, Gui will be attending to Adventure Crafting & Marketing duties at our Alexander Falls Touring Centre, so be sure to pop in and introduce yourself!
